Swami Sahajanand Saraswati An Introduction

In the melee of recently held centenary celebrations of Bihar, one great mind who has attracted little attention is that of Swami Sahajanand. The transformational character of his career and his commitment to the cause of the peasants saw him at loggerheads with many of the frontline nationalist leaders. Nevertheless, he emerges as one of the most outstanding peasant leader the country has ever seen. He represents one of the most important stream of struggle among the several struggles which saw India acquire its independence. The contemporaneity of his career acquires an added meaning as the issues for which he struggled still beleaguers most part of the countryside, which is especially true for a state like Bihar.

Early life and career:-
Born in 1889 in the Ghazipur District of Eastern U.P. he became a renouncer at a very early stage of his life. It was the religious life of meditation and study which engaged him until 1914 after which he became a social activist, initially involving himself with the status struggle of Bhmihars. By the early twenties, Sahajanand’s interests shifted to Gandhian politics of the freedom movement, and then in the late twenties and early thirties to the politics of peasant activism. In these transitions he was not only entering new arenas of activism, but in that very process engaging in ideological and political conflict with his former allies. For example, the leading figures in the Bhumihar-Brahman, Mahasabha with whom Sahajanand was associated in the teens and twenties, were also among the largest land controllers of Bihar and hence his most vigorous antagonists in his peasant activism phase. And by the same token, his admiration for Gandhi shifted in the middle and late thirties to sharp opposition over the issue of peasant rights within the context of the struggle for political freedom from the British.

His personality:-
Before attempting any hasty slotting of his personality on the basis of his association with any one cause, it should be borne in mind that he was an activist constantly on the leading edge of social, cultural, and political change which for him had to be transformational in character. He himself writes in ‘Mera Jeevan Sangharsh’, I am gradually moving ahead .. I have learnt from my experiences. And this much I can say that I have always moved ahead . This process is an ongoing one.

Swami ji and kisan sabha:-
On the basis of experiences gathered from his social activism, Sahajanand formed the West Patna Kisan Sabha in 1928. His struggle against the brazen exploitation of the peasants by the zamindars and the economic backwardness in the countryside created the platform for the Bihar Pradesh Kisan Sabha. As the scope of the struggle widened, it moved through the stages of struggle on economic issues like rent and forced labour to soon cover the much broader issue of the abolition of Zamindari system. The struggle in the area of politics strengthened the organisation and there was a time when in Bihar alone there were more than two lakh members of Kisan Sabha. The strength in which the peasants demonstrated in front of the Bihar Assembly in 1936 still remains unparalleled.

Swami ji on present problem:-
The novelty of Swamiji's career lies in his ability to be always sensitive to his surrounding and transform his ideas and activities in the interest of justice and equity. Hence, given his background in representing the interests of peasant tenants in the early and middle 1930s, it is not surprising to find him arguing the case for agricultural labourers and the rural poor on the margins of the Indian social experience. In his tract 'Khet Mazdoor' he asks, "But who cares for the poor?" In the essays of this tract he vividly describes their condition and their history and submits proposals for change that in many respects have as much relevance today as they did in 1941, when it was written.

Relevance of Swami ji in the present context:-
In his political life he came across politicians of all shades and the affinity and difference which he developed with them on the twin issues of freedom struggle and peasant movement made him more sensitised and multidimensional. He was one of the few members of AICC who opposed the demand for Pakistan. He also opposed the undemocratic manner in which the Constituent Assembly was convened. He remained committed to the idea of an exploitation free socialist India both before and after the independence. His career exemplifies the broad spectrum of Indian experience from the religious and cultural to the social and political activism. There are some direct lessons to be drawn from the life and career of Swami Sahajanand which are very relevant for us today. First, how a meaningful political struggle can be combined successfully with social and economic struggle and, secondly, what should be the nature and form of peasant organisation and struggle in the changing context of rural society. In 1944, in the 8th session of All India Kisan Sabha held at Vijayawada, Swamiji in his presidential speech said, “The middle and big peasantry are trying to use Kisan Sabha for their own benefit, whereas I want to use it for arousing consciousness among the least privileged class of peasants. In my opinion it is the landless peasants and agricultural labourer who are the real Kisan Sabha. It is they who will form the backbone of this struggle in the years to come.”

Such was the personality of Swamiji, he was a fighter to the core and remained uncompromising on the issues concerning the rights of the peasants. There are few in Indian history who can measure his height and he remains one of the most relevant personality for the present society, as much of the countryside is still under the severe clutches of exploitation.

Yogendra Shukla

Yogendra Shukla (1896–1960) was an Indian nationalist born in Bihar. He served in the Cellular Jail (Kalapani), and he was among the founders of Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA). Along with Basawon Singh (Sinha) he was among the founder members of Congress Socialist Party from Bihar.[1]
Yogendra Shukla and his nephew Baikuntha Shukla (1907–1934) hailed from Jalalpur village in Muzaffarpur district (now Vaishali district) of Bihar. From 1932 to 1937, Yogendra served prison sentence in Kalapani, as one of the leaders of the revolutionary movement in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. He became famous for his many exploits. He was a senior associate of Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Datta and had even trained them. He had to serve prison terms for a total of more than sixteen and a half years for his revolutionary activities. During imprisonment in different jails of India, he was subjected to extreme torture, which corroded his iron constitution. He died in a sick condition and he had also become blind.
In October 1932, the Judicial Secretary, A.C.Davies, as directed by the Governor in Council asked the DIG (CID) to suggest the names of the revolutionary convicts with a statement showing the offences for which they had been convicted, the sentence awarded and a brief note showing their connection with the revolutionary movement with a view to transferring them to the Andamans.[2] The DIG (CID) suggested the names of Yogendra Shukla, Basawon Singh (Sinha), Shyamdeo Narayan alias Ram Singh, Ishwar Dayal Singh, Kedar Mani Shukla, Mohit Chandra Adhikari and Ram Pratap Singh.[3]
Yogendra Shukla, Kedar Mani Shukla and Shyamdeo Narayan were transferred to the Andamans in December, 1932.[4] In 1937, Yogendra Shukla was transferred to Hazaribagh Central Jail as a result of his 46 days of hunder strike.[5] When Sri Krishna Sinha formed the first Congress ministry in 1937, he took up the cause of political prisoners and his ministry resigned on the issue on February 15, 1938.[6] As a result the Viceroy conceded the demands and Yogendra Shukla alongwith other political prisoners was released in March, 1938.[7]
Yogendra Shukla joined the Indian National Congress after his release and was elected vice-chairman of the Muzaffarpur District Congress Committee.[8] He was also elected a member of the All India Congress Committee in 1938 but later joined the Congress Socialist Party at the instance of Jayaprakash Narayan.[9] He was arrested in 1940, soon after he became a member of Central Committee of the All India Kisan Sabha in place of Swami Sahajanand Saraswati.[10]
[edit]Quit India Movement

When Mahatma Gandhi launched the Quit India Movement in August, 1942, Yogendra shukla scaled the wall of Hazaribagh Central Jail alongwith Jayaprakash Narayan, Suraj Narayan Singh, Gulab Chand Gupta, Ramnandan Mishra and Shaligram Singh with a view to starting underground movement for freedom.[11] As Jayaprakash Narayan was ill then, Shukla walked a distance to Gaya with Jayaprakash Narayan on his shoulders.[12]
The British Government announced a reward of Rs. 5000 for the arrest of Shukla. He was arrested on December 7, 1942, at Muzaffarpur.[13] The government believed that one day before his arrest Shukla had helped four prisoners escape from Muzaffarpur jail.[14] They were Surajdeo Singh, Ram Babu Kalwar, Brahmanand Gupta and Ganesh Rai.[15]
Yogendra Shukla was lodged in Buxar Jail and kept in bar fetters for three years.[16] In March 1944, he launched hunger-strike in the Buxar Jail.[17]
[edit]During and after Independence

He was released in April, 1946. In 1958, he was nominated a member of the Bihar Legislative Council on behalf of the Praja Socialist Party and continued there till 1960.[18] In 1960, he was taken seriously ill as a result of long years of prison life. He died on November 19, 1960.[19]

One of his other novel "the story of democracy" to have received the honor of the Uttar Pradesh Hindi Sansthan. Besides his satirical novels - Collection "is a student - the leader of the diary" is also very popular. You are currently Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi International Hindi University.

From the author
"The city curfew" was like going through a tragedy for me to write. In those days I was appointed in New Delhi and the old part of town was hit by riots. Every second third year, kick it to me was quite different from the riots. The violence and a lot of evil out of newspaper pages to be part of the world was my experience - an experience not to pursue the next several years, leaving me was like a nightmare. I felt freedom from the nightmare is only one way to put these experiences to write. I have consistently supported me in writing between the language - would leave in the middle. English is an old saying, "Language Is That a poor substitute for. This novel type it very much missed दंगों में मानवीय त्रासदी के जितने शेड्स जितने संघनित रूप मेरे अनुभव संसार में जुड़े उन सबको लिख पाना न संभव था और न ही इस छोटे से उपन्यास को खत्म करने के बाद मुझे लगा कि मैं उस तरह से लिख पाया जिस तरह से उपन्यास के पात्रों और events was my face. It is a confession and I feel no shame over it.
"Curfew in the city" after the publication received mixed responses. Prejudiced by the pioneers of Hindutva novel anti-Hindu and declared to stop the demand and burnt copies of the novel in many places. In contrast, more than fifty Urdu newspapers and magazines "curfew in the city of" Urdu translation published in whole or in part. Pakistan's "Itrka" and "Today" prestigious literary journals such as the novel also featured in the points. Badly divided the society it was not so unusual.
Communal riots in India, the country's two major communities - Hindus and Muslims - their prejudice. On the assumption that an average Hindu riots start rioting Muslims and Hindus in riots that killed large numbers. Why so much that the Muslims killed Hindus by nature cruel, violent and are Dharmonmadi. On the contrary, he believes that the Hindu scrupulous, are liberal and tolerant.
According to data available in the riots since independence more than 70% of the victims are Muslim. Ranchi - Hatia (1967), Ahmedabad (1969), Bhiwandi (1970), Jalgaon (1970) and Mumbai (1992-93) or Ram Janmabhoomi Babri Masjid dispute in connection with the riots, the figure - has gone up 90% is. The same property is also in the cases. Not only Muslims but also those killed in the riots more than the property damage occurred. Police in riot breaks at the same havoc. With the curfew was imposed.
Looking for the causes of this peculiar situation is not very difficult. So an average Hindu is not easy to believe the official statistics. Accuracy of data raises a question mark over the government despite the fact that no government in the world will not be well known that such statistics would prove that life in the minority here - material is not protected.
Now we come to the bias that is what kick-start? The majority of Hindus believe that riots are usually started by Muslims. A Hindu bureaucrats, academics, journalists, jurists or policemen in mind that it is no doubt who has kick-start? Since Muslims are violent by nature, so it is very natural that kick-starts the same. Also refers to the fact that riots occur in those areas where Muslims are in majority.
During my fellowship I "kick-start which makes it" the first "who dies in riots" of the investigation. As a Hindu I had to go through the painful facts. I believe that the riots in the Hindu mind, generous, tolerant and non-violent and brutal loss of Hindus than the Muslims would be violent. The proportion lost their property and the fact there is no secret. Especially Muslims and the Urdu press will know that they will be killed when riot. The police will arrest them, their homes will have the Tlashiaँ. Moreover, the full brunt of the riots will break on them. Why they would like to kick-start? The two may be due either to a community as they are stupid or he may have intended to commit suicide en masse.
Who decided to kick-start is usually done by the fact that at the moment of excitement, who threw the first stone. The decision may be wrong. The stress required for communal violence broke out in the form of a pyramid is build. True even before the riots began, several months before the rumors, accusations and negative publicity mill is run. Stress gradually increases and eventually becomes a departure point when only a stone or a provocative slogan is able to kick-start. The departure point of the fact that there is no sense of who threw the first stone!
Myth of the introduction of anti-Muslim violence to better understand an example will be enough. In 1970, massive riots in Bhiwandi. On May 7, riot began when out on the birth anniversary of Shivaji were protests by Muslims on the march. At first glance, seems obvious cause of the riots began. Can easily be said that the Muslims started rioting. But go to the bottom of the events will be clear that the case is not so easy. The past several months, the Hindutva forces were involved in the inflammatory and provocative actions. Justice Madan Commission has outlined in detail on these activities. Procession on the road on both sides of the argument. Muslims wanted to march Jaaa not be that way where they had to mosques. Hindu processions stuck to the same way. Meanwhile, triggered protests from Muslims and kick-started. When we first decided to start riots and protests have to take into account developments.
First keep in mind the fact that Muslims would know that they Pitenge riot. Why again and again they throw the first stone? Poverty, lack of education and the fear of Muslims led by opportunistic builds.
I think with violence - Indian Muslims also have to think on other major issues. First of all it must be recognized that the two nations was based on the principle of division of the country was utterly wrong. Neither nations have been constructed on the basis of religion or Hindus and Muslims are two different nations. India's Hindus and Muslims whose common social, economic, linguistic background, are much closer to each other than those whose cultures are different but just like religion.
There's no time to get involved in the question, Who made the division of the country. Partition was a big mistake and we have suffered a major brunt. The time has come when the people of the subcontinent to sit and look closely at the questions.
At the same time - with the Muslims should take cognizance of the psychology which Nijamen - Mustafa or Sharia law-based society, the discussion continues. Should be accepted as a secular faith. Not as an immediate policy. In a democracy, secularism, the battle can be fought together in the fields but not Bँtkr.

Raj Narayan

Indira Gandhi was one of the strongest leaders of Independent India. She was the Prime Minister of the Republic of India for three consecutive terms from 1966 to 1977 and for a fourth term from 1980 until her assassination in 1984, a total of fifteen years. She was never defeated in any election exception the Rai Bareli Loksabha general elections held in 1977. Do you know the person who defeated Indira Gandhi in that election? His name was Raj Narayan. He was a candidate of Janata Party for the Rai Bareli Lok Sabha seat in 1977 where he defeated Indira Gandhi the then Prime Minister of India. Then he became the Health Minister in Morarji Desai’s cabinet. However, he was defeated by Indira Gandhi in 1971 General elections.

Raj Narayan accused Indira Gandhi of corrupt electoral practices and filed an election petition against her. The Allahabad High Court on 12 June 1975 upheld the accusations and set aside the election of Indira Gandhi and also disqualified her to contest Lok Sabha election for next 6 years. Many political experts claimed that this was the main reason behind declartion of emergency in 1975.

After getting defeat in the Allahabad Loksabha Elections, Raj Narayan lodged cases of election fraud and use of state machinery for election purposes against Mrs. Gandhi in the Allahabad High Court. On June 12, 1975, Justice Jagmohanlal Sinha of the Allahabad High Court found the Prime Minister guilty on the charge of misuse of government machinery for her election campaign. The court declared her election null and void. She was also unseated her from her seat in the Lok Sabha. The high court also banned her from contesting any election for an additional six years.

Because the court unseated her on comparatively frivolous charges, while she was acquitted on more serious charges, The Times of India newspaper described it as ‘firing the Prime Minister for a traffic ticket’. However, strikes in labor and trade unions, student unions and government unions swept across the country. Protests led by big three J.P.Narayan, Raj Narayan and Morarji Desai flooded the streets of Delhi close to the Parliament building and the PM’s residence. The great efforts of these three politicians was praised worldwide as it took over 4 years for Justice Jagmohan Lal Sinha to finally pass judgement against Indira Gandhi.

Raj Narayan was one of the pillars of Socialist movement in India along with Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia and JaiPrakash Narayan (JP). Dr. Lohia described him as “a person who has heart of a lion and practices of Gandhi”. Dr. Lohia admired him a lot, and even said that “if in India there could be just three or four persons like him, dictatorship can never shadow the democracy”. He was a great freedom fighter. He was president of Student Congress during 1942 revolution, and he lead the revolution in and around Varanasi district. The protest and revolution under his leadership on August 9, 1942, is considered as one of the best this country has ever seen.

He was so active in freedom struggle that British government wanted to get a hold of him and hence ordered, in 1942, a prize of Rs. 5000/- to anybody who can get him “Dead or Alive”. In his lifetime, he was jailed 80 times, spending a total time of nearly 17 years in jail in his lifespan of 69 years. Unfortunately, today very few people of our generation know about him. We have forgotten his ideals, thinkings and philosphies. Now the time has come to remember our great freedom fighters and use their thoughts and ideas for the sustainable development of India republic.
